2013 Governor's Island Art Fair Catalog:
"Until just a few years ago, few outside of the military had ever visited Governors Island. For centuries Governors Island was a military base, home to the U.S. Army and Coast Guard. On Jan. 31, 2003, the island was transferred to the people of New York and its increasing popularity as a cultural destination has reinvented the abandoned facility. 4heads recognizes that the purpose of this unique island has changed from one of armament and imprisonment to an experiment in art and culture - and we are pleased to be able to provide free space for artists to exhibit and create, to make art (not war).
Governors Island Art Fair is a large-scale exhibition created entirely by artists and volunteers working together to share in the historic space generously provided by The Trust for Governors Island. Housed in decommissioned army barracks and former military residences, GIAF exhibits 100 rooms of work by 100 artists and galleries from around the world in a wide range of disciplines. The founders and organizers have established a hands-off curatorial environment, inviting each artist to create an experience through their individual vision.
Formed in 2008, 4heads is a New York based group, run by Nicole Laemmle, Jack Robinson and Antony Zito. Their mission as organizers of Governors Island Art Fair is to offer independent artists and select galleries the chance to exhibit their work within the context of a sprawling exhibition platform. Once chosen as an exhibitor, individual artists pay no fees to participate - leveling the playing field and opening the doors to a wide range of established and undiscovered talent.
For the past five years it has been a privilege for 4heads to organize this event and we are very thankful to those who have provided support to us along the way. As our Artist in Residence and Educational programs continue to develop, it is our hope to forge more new opportunities for artists everywhere. Giving artists a chance to exhibit their work in such an extraordinary atmosphere has been extremely gratifying to us and we are thankful for the brilliant contributions of all our participants, partners and volunteers. Thanks to your help, we are able to bring this exhibition to Governors Island each year. We would like to emphasize our gratitude for all that has been done on our behalf - from the supporting architecture of The Trust for Governors Island and all of the island’s employees, to each exhibitor and every art lover who comes to see Governors Island Art Fair.
Sincerely, 4heads"
